In spite of all the reading and investigation I undertook about learning to fly, I never really knew what to expect from the entire learning process. If you are interested in pursuing a dream to fly or are currently a student pilot, this narrative of my experiences will help you understand the process and what could be in store for you. If you are already a licensed pilot my story will bring back pleasant memories. In either case, you will be able to compare your development to mine. To me, learning to fly an airplane was like growing up. I went from a virtually helpless infant to a graduate in less than a year. I had my father’s advice and the wisdom he passed on, the love and support of my wife and family, and forty-two years of life lessons. I was armed with logic, confidence, perseverance, ability, desire and common sense. I was also saddled with fear, anxiety, doubt, responsibility and a wild imagination! Each of these would play a role in my development. Follow along with my flight training from the introductory flight through Private Pilot certification. It was challenging, stimulating, frustrating, humbling and very enjoyable. I’ve also learned that it never ends. I learn something new every time I fly. Kind of like life.
