As time went on I had longer and longer parades and I found that the men were coming to hand very well and that both officers and men were much pleased by the alteration of the hours of parades. Previously it had always been the custom to have parade at phenomenally early hou This I found was detested by both officers and men alike and as to feeling the effects of the sun I discovered that everybody was quite willing to parade at 9 or 10 A.m. instead of 4 in the early morning. The men especially liked this alteration. When April came my officers were very uneasy about the few parades which I had held and the Adjutant came and begged me to have a few parades in the afternoon as the bayonet exercise was not smartly done. "My good fellow" I said "I am not going to have a single extra parade for any general that was ever born. You and I know more about this regiment than anybody else does. Do you imagine that I can't put this through?" The much dreaded General came and gave us two good hours of first-class drill. Then he sounded "Officers fall out" and we all went up and saluted. "Harris" he said to me "do you know what I am going to say of your regiment?" "No sir" I replied "but I hope it is nothing very bad." "I am going to say that it is the best regiment in my division.
